Books for KC

"Guess Again" by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Adam Rex - The rhyming text in Mac Barnett's debut picture book asks readers to fill in the obvious blank to guess what the obvious picture is, but when the page is turned, what's revealed is anything but obvious! You can't help but laugh at the wonderfully absurd and hilarious result of this book that makes plays on words, pictures, and your expectations! --rec by Jon Scieszka

"Little Oink" by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, illustrated by Jen Corace -- From the creators of "Little Pea" and "Little Hoot" comes this tidy tale of a decidedly different pig. Little Oink is a neat little fellow. Clean, clean, clean, that's all he wants to do. But Mama and Papa won't have it! They say in order to be a proper pig, he has to learn to make a proper mess. Readers who hate clean up will love this humorous twist on a universal dilemma. --rec by Jon Scieszka

How Rocket Learned to Read by Tad Hills, also Duck and Goose

Walter Scott Prize (2009)

The shortlist for the inaugural £25,000 (US$38,179) Walter Scott prize for historical fiction includes:
Hodd by Adam Thorpe,
Lustrum by Robert Harris,
Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant,
Stone's Fall by Iain Pears,
The Glass Room by Simon Mawer,
The Quickening Maze by Adam Foulds
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, -- Winner!

as reported by the Guardian. The winner will be named June 19.

"They are giving history back its stories," said Alistair Moffat, chair of the judges. "The best way to understand the past is often to read a novelist rather than an historian. We need to know where we came from, what kind of people our ancestors were.... What people in the past believed--such as the absolute certainty about heaven and hell in the Middle Ages--is every bit as important in telling us what they were like as what they left behind in the historical record."

Amazon introduced the Breakthrough Novel Award in 2007. The first competition began in late 2007 and ended in early 2008. In mid-January 2008, up to 836 authors were selected as semi-finalists and received a capsule review of their manuscript from Publishers Weekly. On February 19, 2008, 100 semi-finalists had their manuscripts read by Penguin editors.

The European Book Club comes to Brooklyn!
In 2008, several European cultural institutions in New York City created the European Book Club in order to provide people an opportunity to collectively read contemporary European literature in translation and meet to exchange ideas about books, stories, and authors. The program proved to be so successful that the sessions quickly filled up, leaving many people unable to participate.
For the 2009 season, Brooklyn Public Library is pleased to announce that it will be partnering with the European Book Club organizers and hosting mirror sessions for each participating institution’s book selection. For more information visit the European Book Club website.
The 2009 Schedule:
All sessions will be held in the Trustees Room at the Central Library on Grand Army Plaza and run from 7 pm to 8:30 pm. The link for each session will direct you to the corresponding sponsor’s session.
