Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for comic fiction (2009-2010)

2010
What's so funny about Ian McEwan? Even his most devoted fans may be a bit surprised to learn that the novelist's latest effort, Solar, is one of the finalists for this year's Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for comic fiction.

McEwan has said, "I hate comic novels; it's like being wrestled to the ground and being tickled, being forced to laugh." But the Independent noted he "did concede that the book had extended comic stretches."

Other books on the shortlist are
Solar by Ian McEwan -- Winner!
One Day by David Nicholls,
Diamond Star Halo by Tiffany Murray,
Skippy Dies by Paul Murray and
From Aberystwyth with Love by Malcolm Pryce.

"The winner will be announced at the Guardian Hay festival, and will receive a jereboam of champagne, a set of the Everyman Wodehouse as well as getting a locally raised Gloucestershire Old Spot pig named after the winning book," the Guardian wrote.

2009 Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize Shortlist

"Forget the prestige, the sales boost and the thousands of pounds that come with winning the Booker or the Costa prize: what any author really wants is a pig named after their novel. Fortunately for the writers in the running for its 10th annual award, the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse prize for comic fiction does just that," the Guardian observed in announcing this year's shortlist. The winner will be named May 29.

Finalists include:

A Snowball in Hell by Christopher Brookmyre
A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz
Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi by Geoff Dyer -- WINNER!
Their Finest Hour and a Half by Lissa Evans
Rancid Pansies by James Hamilton-Paterson, added #1 in series Cooking with Fernet Branca
How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone by Sasa Stanisic.

"I have a very simple rule," said judge David Campbell, publisher at Everyman. "If I'm not smiling by page one or laughing by page six, the book is in some trouble. But this year's shortlisted books are all bloody good."

Ondaatje Prize (2010)

2010 Ondaatje  Prize
Ian Thomson's The Dead Yard won the £10,000 (US$14,326) Ondaatje prize, which honors a book that best evokes the spirit of a place. The Guardian wrote that The Dead Yard "sees the author walking the streets of Jamaica, describing its poverty, gang rule and police brutality, meeting its people and exploring how the country has changed since its independence in 1962. 'You visitors are always getting it wrong,' he is told by one Jamaican. 'Either it's golden beaches or guns, guns, guns, guns. Is there nothing in between?' "

Thomson's book bested a shortlist that included
The Plot by Madeleine Bunting,
The Shadow of a Smile by Kachi A. Ozumba
In Other Rooms, Other Wonders by Daniyal Mueenuddin

Louise, the Adventures of a Chicken by Kate DiCamillo, illustrated by Harry Bliss
One by Kathryn Otoshi (KO Kids Books)
Too Many Toys by David Shannon (Scholastic)

For the first time, this year's winners will be chosen by ABC booksellers via online voting, and results will be announced at the ABC's dinner during BEA. Also the runners up will receive a new E.B. White Read Aloud Honor award. In previous years, the judging committee picked the winners.

The E.B. White Read Aloud Award was established in 2004 by The Association of Booksellers for Children (ABC) to honor books that its membership felt embodied the universal read aloud standards that were created by the work of the beloved author E.B. White.

In 2006 the award was expanded into two categories: The E. B. White Read Aloud Award for Picture Books, and The E. B. White Read Aloud Award for Older Readers. Titles are nominated for the award by ABC booksellers, and then the final decision is made by a committee of booksellers that meets annually in February. The awards are publicly announced on the first Monday in April, and the official presentation takes place during a children's dinner at BookExpo America.

Because the award nominees are generated by independent booksellers based on books they have loved in their own stores, there is no formal outside submission process.

Colorado Book Awards (1991-2010)

From Colorado Humanities and Center for the Book accessed 5/25/10

History of the Colorado Book Award

The Colorado Book Awards began in 1991 with four categories-Non-Fiction, Fiction, Poetry, and Children's. In 1993 Young Adult was added as a category. Since then, the Colorado Center for the Book (a program department of the Colorado Humanities since April 2004) has amended categories depending on the number and kind of books nominated. The Colorado Book Award has celebrated Colorado's most noted authors, including John Fielder, Linda Hogan, Jon Krakauer, Kent Haruf, Margaret Coel, Tom Noel, Stephanie Kane, Avi, Bruce Ducker, David Milofsky, Joanne Greenberg, T.A. Barron, and many others. Year indicates year of publication.

Colorado Humanities & Center for the Book is pleased to announce that finalists have been selected for the 2010 Colorado Book Awards.

"This year's selectors read and discussed 145 entries to select these authors and their works for the Colorado Book Awards finalist level," says Josephine Jones, Colorado Humanities Director of Programs & Center for the Book.

The Colorado Book Awards recognize outstanding contributions by Colorado authors, editors, illustrators and photographers in multiple categories: anthology/collection, biography, children's literature, creative nonfiction, history, literary fiction, genre fiction (historical, romance, science fiction/fantasy, mystery/thriller) general nonfiction, juvenile literature, pictorial, poetry, and young adult literature.

Winners in all categories will be announced at the 19th annual Colorado Book Awards June 25 at 2 pm during the Aspen Summer Words Literary Festival the week of June 21-25, 2010 at the Doerr-Hosier Center in Aspen, Colorado.

Eric Hoffer Book Award 2004-2010

From Eric Hoffer Award accessed 5/17/10

The Eric Hoffer Award for short prose and books was established at the start of the 21st century as a means of opening a door to writing of significant merit. It honors the memory of the great American philosopher Eric Hoffer by highlighting salient writing, as well as the independent spirit of small publishers. The winning stories and essays are published in Best New Writing, and the book awards are covered in the US Review of Books.

The Prizes
Two grand prizes are awarded annually: one for short prose (i.e. fiction and creative nonfiction) and one for independent books from small, micro, and academic presses, as well as self-published books. Prizes include a $500 award for short prose and a $1,500 award for best independent book. In addition to the two main grand prize awards, various other honors and distinctions are given for both prose and books, including the Montaigne Medal and the da Vinci Eye. Submissions are accepted each year by nominating books and prose. The book deadline is January 21st. The prose deadline is March 31st.

Prior to 2007, the Eric Hoffer Award was called the Writers' Notes Award for short prose and independent books.

Independent foreign fiction prize (2009-10)

2010 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize Longlist
from Three Percent - article by E.J. Van Lanen

So, even though we’re in danger right now of becoming a blog that only writes about book prizes (or maybe I’m only feeling that way because the Best Translated Book Award has been on my mind for so long), we would be remiss if we didn’t make mention of the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize Longlist:

* Boris Akunin The Coronation (translated by Andrew Bromfield from the Russian)
* Ketil Bjørnstad To Music (Deborah Dawkin & Erik Skuggevik; Norwegian)
* Hassan Blasim The Madman of Freedom Square (Jonathan Wright; Arabic) Comma Press
* Philippe Claudel Brodeck’s Report (John Cullen; French) MacLehose Press  --Winner!
* Julia Franck The Blind Side of the Heart (Anthea Bell; German) Harvill Secker  --shortlist
* Pietro Grossi Fists (Howard Curtis; Italian)   --shortlist
* Elias Khoury Yalo (Humphrey Davies; Arabic) MacLehose Press
* Jonathan Littell The Kindly Ones (Charlotte Mandell; French) Chatto & Windus
* Alain Mabanckou Broken Glass (Helen Stevenson; French)   --shortlist
* Javier Marías Your Face Tomorrow, Vol 3: Poison, Shadow and Farewell (Margaret Jull Costa; Spanish
* Yoko Ogawa The Housekeeper and the Professor (Stephen Snyder; Japanese) Harvill Secker
* Claudia Piñeiro Thursday Night Widows (Miranda France; Spanish) Bitter Lemon Press
* Sankar Chowringhee (Arunava Sinha; Bengali)   --shortlist
* Rafik Schami The Dark Side of Love (Anthea Bell; German)   --shortlist
* Bahaa Taher Sunset Oasis (Humphrey Davies; Arabic) Sceptre

There are a few things to note: Although the bigger presses, or big name presses, are well represented, it’s interesting to note how much of the heavy lifting for translation in the UK is done by smaller independent presses (Comma, Maia, Bitter Lemon); there are three books (three!) that are translated from Arabic, which has to be some kind of record; and Humphrey Davies and Anthea Bell have the knack—two nominated titles each.

2009 Info

The Armies by Evelio Rosero, translated from the Spanish by Anne McLean, won the Independent Foreign Fiction prize. Author and translator share the £10,000 (US$15,181) award.

Boyd Tonkin praised the winner in the Independent: "Gentle in voice but ferocious in impact, The Armies tells the story of the destruction of a small highland town by the rival bands of soldiers, guerrillas and paramilitaries that have plagued rural Colombia for so many bitter years. Immaculately pitched and paced, Anne McLean's English version does it lavish justice."

Two Colombian authors, Evelio Rosero and Juan Gabriel Vásquez, are among the six writers shortlisted for the £10,000 (US$14,439) Independent foreign fiction prize, the Guardian reported. The award acknowledges both novelist and translator, dividing the prize money equally between the two.

The Independent prize shortlist:
Voice Over by Céline Curiol, translated by Sam Richard from the French
Beijing Coma: A Novel by Ma Jian, translated by Flora Drew from the Chinese
The Siege by Ismail Kadare, translated by David Bellos from the Albanian
The Armies by Evelio Rosero, translated by Anne McLean from the Spanish
The Informers by Juan Gabriel Vasquez, translated by Anne McLean from the Spanish
Friendly Fire by A B Yehoshua, translated by Stuart Schoffman from the Hebrew

Amazon.ca First Novel Award (2009-2010)

2010 Award info from Quill and Quire accessed 5/3/10
Newfoundlander Jessica Grant, author of Come, Thou Tortoise (Knopf Canada), has won the 2010 Amazon.ca First Novel Award which was co-sponsored by Quill & Quire. Grant was up against Diana Fitzgerald Bryden for No Place Strange (Key Porter Books), Annabel Lyon for The Golden Mean (Random House Canada), Damian Tarnopolsky for Goya’s Dog (Hamish Hamilton Canada), Dragan Todorovic for Diary of Interrupted Days (Random House Canada), and Ian Weir for Daniel O’Thunder (Douglas & McIntyre). The prize is worth $7,500 and honours a debut Canadian novel published in 2009.

The award was presented last night at a ceremony in Toronto. Quill & Quire editor Stuart Woods, who chose the six finalists, describes the winning book as “a heartfelt tale full to the brim with warm sentiment and the gentle absurdities of contemporary life.” The jury was comprised of poet and novelist Priscila Uppal, author and past winner Joseph Boyden, and Hal Wake, artistic director of the Vancouver International Writer’s Festival.
Grant is a member of the Newfoundland writing group The Burning Rock, along with Lisa Moore and Michael Winter. Her first book of fiction, Making Light of Tragedy, was published by The Porcupine’s Quill in 2005.
